Started rallying at age 19, but had a thirty year break before restarting in 2015.
Have never entered the East African Safari Classic Rally this will be the first time.
Sadly, some of the longer events that have disappeared like London- Peking or World Cup Rally seem like they would have been stunning to contest. And of course, Safari Rally is right up there AND still available to compete on.
Since 2015 I have been trying to compete all around the world on greatest variety of events possible. I’m especially focussed on the longer ‘endurance’ events. After Safari, I think a trip to New Zealand and Australia would be great.
I have rallied in UK, Belgium, France, Spain, Czechia, Italy, Hungary, Holland, Lebanon, USA, Canada and Mexico.
Best result was 2nd in FIA European Historic Rally Championship.
Relationship to Navigator: Initially a “hired gun” he is now a good friend. I think he treats the old guy with more patience than he lets on. His experience has been a priceless contribution to the team.
Safari Rally means growing up with the WRC in the late 70’s and into the group B era, Safari was always the gold standard for a hard endurance event.
I love Africa, the wide open spaces, the people. The feeling that you are in a “special place”.
I have driven a Saab 96, Escort Mk2, Talbot Samba Gp A, Skoda 130, Vauxhall Astra GpA, Escort Mk1.
Favourite Car: That's like asking about a favourite child. I have enjoyed them all!
Fun Experiences: Many, many. Possibly one of my favourites is when contesting in the La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, we were late on a road section into Mexico City. The Federal Police took up position in front and behind and with lights and sirens we ran down the interstate at over 110Mph for 45 minutes into Mexico City.
Started rallying at age 13
Have never entered the East African Safari Classic Rally.
Greatest event was the Donegal International in Ireland because it’s so much more than just a rally, it’s a celebration with electric atmosphere and a fierce battle for over 300 km on some of Ireland’s best stages.
I would like to return to the Silver Fern in New Zealand because it’s another marathon rally, and the roads out there are very flowing and varied from region to region, it makes it very rewarding for the entire team to complete the event.
I have rallied all over the world
Best result was finishing 1st overall in the Cambrian Rally in my home forests of North Wales in the brand new Proton R5 was very special to me.
Relationship to driver: Great friend having competed together worldwide for over 4 years.
Safari Rally means adventure!!
Africa is a massive continent with interesting diverse culture and lifestyle.
There are too many to list, but anything from the most modern WRC and R5 all the way to Classic Mini, I have been fortunate enough to compete in over the years.
There are so many cars that are so much fun in their own ways but for pure enjoyment and holliganism you cannot beat a Ford Escort.
Fun experiences: Competing with Lewis Morgan has taken years off my life, but getting to look back on those experiences competing with him is always so much fun. Our 1st overall in the Night Owl Rally in Wales was one of the most fun experiences possible in a rally car.
